Grooverider
Genres: Jungle
Raymond Bingham was born in 1967 in Streatham, south London, and alongside his musical partner Fabio, is recognised as one of the true architects of drum and bass. The pair met through the pirate radio station Phase One in Brixton, began DJing together at local clubs, and in 1988 launched their legendary Rage night at Heaven -- a Thursday session that became the crucible in which jungle music was forged. The records Grooverider championed at Rage helped define the sonic palette of an entire genre. Under his production alias Codename John, Grooverider released a string of dark, technically advanced tracks through his own Prototype Recordings label, founded in the mid-1990s. Prototype became a home for the harder, more experimental edge of drum and bass, releasing music from Dillinja, Ed Rush, Photek and Optical. His 1998 album Mysteries of Funk won a MOBO Award, cementing his status not just as a DJ but as a serious producer and curator. In 1998, Fabio and Grooverider brought their partnership to BBC Radio 1, hosting a show that ran for over a decade and introduced drum and bass to a national audience every week. Their contribution to the culture was recognised with DJ Mags Outstanding Contribution to Music award in 2015. Grooverider remains a towering figure in the scene -- a selector whose depth of knowledge and impeccable taste continue to set the standard for what a drum and bass DJ should be.
Grooverider has 3 upcoming drum & bass event(s) listed on DNBRAVE.
