Goldie

Genres: Jungle, Atmospheric

Born Clifford Joseph Price in Walsall and raised in Wolverhampton, Goldie emerged from one of the most turbulent childhoods imaginable -- put up for adoption at three, he was shuffled between care homes and foster families throughout his youth. He channelled that restless energy first into breakdancing and then into graffiti art, earning a reputation on the B-boy scene before the sound of breakbeats and bass pulled him toward music. By the early 1990s, he was at the epicentre of the emerging jungle movement in London, and in 1994 he co-founded Metalheadz with Kemistry and Storm, a label that would become the spiritual home of intelligent drum and bass. His 1995 debut album Timeless was a seismic moment for electronic music. Fusing breakbeats with orchestral textures, soul vocals from Diane Charlemagne, and an ambition that was unprecedented in the genre, it entered the UK Albums Chart at number seven and proved drum and bass could be high art. The lead track "Inner City Life" became an anthem that transcended the scene entirely. His follow-up, Saturnz Return (1998), pushed even further into experimental territory, featuring a single track that stretched over sixty minutes. Beyond music, Goldie has acted in Guy Ritchie films and James Bond productions, appeared on BBC television, and was appointed an MBE in 2016 for services to music and young people. His Metalheadz Sunday Sessions at the Blue Note club in Hoxton achieved legendary status in the 1990s, and the label remains a cornerstone of the culture. Goldie is not merely a drum and bass artist -- he is one of the genre's founding architects.

Goldie has 4 upcoming drum & bass event(s) listed on DNBRAVE.
