DJ Rap

Genres: Jungle

Born Charissa Saverio on 7 December 1968 in Singapore to an Italian father and an Irish-Malaysian mother, DJ Rap moved to Southampton, England as a teenager and quickly immersed herself in the emerging rave culture of the late 1980s. By the early 1990s she had established herself as a formidable force in the jungle scene, breaking barriers in what was an overwhelmingly male-dominated world. Her 1993 single "Spiritual Aura" became an underground classic that helped define the sound of intelligent jungle. In 1994, she launched her own label Propa Talent, which went on to release over 200 tracks and became one of the most respected imprints in the genre. Her 1999 album Learning Curve showcased her versatility, blending drum and bass sensibilities with more accessible electronic and pop elements. A sister label, Impropa Talent, further expanded her empire, and she has remixed for global superstars including Madonna and Moby, bridging the gap between underground credibility and mainstream recognition. Voted the number one female DJ in the world by Shejay, DJ Rap is rightly considered a pioneer who blazed a trail for every woman who has followed her into the DJ booth. Her influence stretches far beyond her own productions -- she proved that talent and determination could shatter glass ceilings in electronic music. Still active as a DJ, producer, and label boss, she remains an inspirational figure whose legacy continues to resonate across generations of artists.
