Karl Francis, born in 1974 in Clapham, South London, has been a towering force in drum and bass since the very beginning. Operating under the name Dillinja -- along with aliases including Capone, Trinity, and Cybotron -- he began producing in 1991, making him one of the longest-serving and most prolific artists in the genre, with over 500 releases to his name. In 1997, alongside longtime collaborator Lemon D (Kevin King), he founded Valve Recordings, a label named after the valve components used in reggae sound system amplifiers to produce warmer bass tones. His debut album Cybotron, released in 2001 through a deal with London Records, is considered a masterclass in heavyweight drum and bass production. Dillinjas sound is unmistakable: colossal sub-bass, meticulously engineered drums, and a dark, rolling energy that redefined what a bass-heavy track could sound like. His single "Twist Em Out" featuring MC Skibadee reached number 35 in the UK Singles Chart in 2003, and his production credits extend to collaborations with David Bowie, Bjork, and Basement Jaxx. In the world of drum and bass, Dillinja is revered as an engineer as much as a musician. His obsessive attention to sound design, particularly his bass synthesis and drum programming, influenced an entire generation of producers who followed. His live sets carry a physical weight that has to be experienced in person -- the kind of bass pressure that vibrates through your chest. He remains a living legend, an artist whose contribution to the sonic architecture of drum and bass is simply immeasurable.
