Breakage
Genres: Halftime
James Boyle, born 28 November 1982 in Slough, Berkshire, first encountered dance music at the age of seven through his foster brother. After moving to London as a teenager, he became captivated by the city's jungle scene and began producing under the name Breakage. His early work caught the attention of the legendary Reinforced Records, where he released a series of EPs and delivered a critically acclaimed remix of Nasty Habits' "Here Come the Drums." His debut album, This Too Shall Pass, arrived in 2006 and established him as one of the most forward-thinking producers in drum and bass. In 2007, Breakage signed to Shy FX's Digital Soundboy imprint, a move that coincided with a bold creative pivot. While maintaining his drum and bass roots, he embraced the minimal rhythms and cavernous basslines of the emerging dubstep movement. His 2010 album Foundation showcased this evolution brilliantly, featuring collaborations with Burial, Roots Manuva, Newham Generals, and Skream. The single "Fighting Fire" featuring Jess Mills reached number 34 on the UK Singles Chart in 2011, bringing his sound to an even wider audience. Breakage's career is defined by a refusal to stand still. His music occupies the space between subtlety and brute force -- from deep dub textures to heavyweight bass drops to the edges of electronic pop. Whether crafting a dark roller or a dancefloor-ready two-step cut, his productions carry a signature weight and clarity that few can match. He remains one of the most respected and versatile producers in UK bass music.
