Bizzy B
Genres: Jungle, Breakbeat
Brian Johnson, better known as Bizzy B, is one of the true originators of the jungle sound. Active since the early 1990s, this East London producer founded Brain Records in 1991 and began releasing breakbeat hardcore that fused house and techno with heavy breakbeats and ragga vocal samples. Through Brain Records he introduced the world to a staggering roster of future legends, including Peshay, DJ Zinc, Technical Itch, and Red Alert and Mike Slammer. Alongside Dean Vincent (Pugwash), he also formed The Dream Team and co-founded Joker Records, keeping up a prolific release schedule throughout the decade. Dubbed "The Godfather of Choppage," Bizzy B pioneered the hyper-chopped breakbeat programming that became a hallmark of darkside jungle. Tracks like the 1993 "The Power" (as Warped Kore) helped define the sub-genre, combining rave euphoria with darker themes and increasingly chaotic drum edits. He was extraordinarily prolific, releasing dozens of records under various aliases, and his sound evolved from raw hardcore into the jump-up and tech-step corners of drum and bass. For over three decades, Bizzy B has remained an ambassador for hardcore, jungle, and drum and bass. His influence runs deep through the DNA of the entire scene -- from the chopped Amen breaks of the early 1990s to modern neurofunk production techniques. He continues to DJ, produce, and champion the culture, reminding every new generation exactly where this music came from.
